Meaningful games

66-60.

At this point (6:15pm), you are probably fully versed in the second night of carnage in Phoenix. Wright hit two homers, Jacobs hit two homers, and they combined to score nine of the team's eighteen (18) runs. It was a lighthearted romp, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The only bad news is Jae Seo's ERA ballooned to 1.30.

Watching SportsCenter at the moment. Here's what I've learned: Jeff Brantley is a first-class, ocean-going baffoon.

Asked for his analysis of the NL wild card race, he said (and I'm paraphrasing but it's pretty close):

"What a great story it would be for the New York Mets or Washington Nationals to make the playoffs. But the reality is they're... it's not going to happen. Their starting pitching just isn't as good as it's made out to be and they don't have what it takes to overtake all the other teams in the division.

Whether it's the Phillies, Astros, or (stumbles and looks down at his notes) Florida Marlins, I think you're talking about the Houston Astros. Why? Roger Clemens, Roy Oswalt, Andy Pettitte, Brad Lidge. Book it."

He's entitled to his opinion, of course, and the Astros are a fine pick, but how can a professional baseball analyst come to the conclusion that the Marlins, Phillies, and Astros are legit contenders, while the Mets aren't? Is two games really an insurmountable lead? Isn't our starting pitching looking pretty good at this point?

Mr. President,

Call in the National Guard. We're killing the National League.

Unless you were a Cubs fan, you've enjoyed the past two weeks in Metsville. Who among us does not love David Wright (did The Catch begin all this. Might be worth a look back as THE seminal moment in The Drive. Sort of like Earnest Byner’s “The Fumble” was the perverse, unhappy, year-later corollary to the “other” Drive.

That’s a goatse-like stretch, but I’m happy for the Sons of Darryl (darrylstrawberry.org, or colombianmarchingpowder.edu). I’m happy for Doyle. I'm happy for the Stumpster, who has now cheerfully danced between the Doyle-slapdown raindrops for a full week (and, thusly, avoided meta-commentary on the part of the nattering nabobs of negativity). I’m not so happy for the CBM, in part because he’s a Kang-hating fascist, and in part because, well, I’m not sure that, despite oft-repeated claims to the contrary, a cowbell’s good for what ails you.

That's all I got. Enjoy "Taradise."

In a word, no, it isn't good enough. Five pitchers do not a rotation make. Pop quiz: When is Pedro Martinez not that good? Answer: When you team him with Victor Zambrano, Kris Benson, Jae Seo, and Tom Glavine. Listen, playing in Shea in a hobbled, perpetually crappy NL East might make some of their ERAs this year look respectable, but their peripherals still suck hard (excepting Pedro's). Throw them into the crucible of a real playoff chase, against real teams, in ballparks slightly smaller than whole cities, sprinkle in some weak infield defense and Chris Woodward at first, and you have a staff and a team that is going to get exposed. Hark! Can't hang with Oswalt/Clemens/Petttttitte or Beckett/Burnett/Willis.
